D.U Evening College
Delhi University Evening Colleges
There are about 11 good Evening Colleges affiliated to Delhi University across the city. These Colleges cater a good number of admission seekers in new session in DU.
Though, These colleges are quite at par with their counter part-day colleges, yet
most of the aspirant admission hunter-bright students normally do not think on the
existence of Evening Colleges and don't consider them as their desired higher educational destinations. It is true that there are some misconceptions around Evening Colleges in Delhi University. Unfortunately,' Evening ' is it self a stigma which prevent bright students and especially Girls student to go for Evening Colleges. The Girls are afraid of their security as it is evening colleges. But,reality is something different.A time comes during admission when students with lesser marks are refused from 'A' grade colleges, the aspirants do not have no option but to throng towards Evening colleges.
Though Delhi University has increased number of its seats to a comfortably high, yet many of 80% per centers ultimately becomes disappointed.Because,The day colleges can't cater all the bright students. Baring West Bengal Higher secondary board ,most of the state boards produce a large number of 90% percentars. Specially,CBSE Chennai region & ICSE board produce unimaginable number of 99% per centers .Delhi University being most attractive educational hub in the country and many streams are open in Delhi,a strong focks of admission seekers throng to Delhi University. This session in 2009-10, about 1.5L admission forms are sold. Reality is this that many of good markers would likely to return from elite College doors Because of scarcity of seats to their desired subjects. This is very natural phenomena used to be seen every year in DU. Where will those aspirants go then? Their First Choice campus-colleges disrupts their high hope and aspirations because of cut-off. Now,They have two options left, if they want to stick to D.U. only. Either SOL (School of Open Learning) or Evening Colleges are the ultimate shelter. The students, with far sight, who fill up common admission form, simultaneously, for the Evening Colleges also, they get a chance to have a seat over there. And, One should remember to have a seat in a well famed Evening College is much better than a day college. So,ultimately they must call Evening Colleges as 'Good 'evening'colleges.
I must emphatically say as one of the Evening Faculty that a few evening colleges have been doing much better results than their counter part day colleges. Not,only in studies but in sports and extra curricular activities, the students of Evening Colleges performes much better than day colleges.Take for example, the BCom students of Deshbandu Evening College used to win Gold Medal in some consecutive past years. In wrestling Deshbandhu Evening always show monopoly performances,
Dayal Sing College Evening,Bhagat Singh College Evening,Satyawati College Evening,Zakir Hussain(Delhi College) College Evening have been doing remarkably well. So,they should not be called as 'B'grade Colleges.
What's in a name'!
But,unfortunately the very name 'Evening College' has degraded the good institution to 'B' class institution in the mind of new entrants. The name 'Evening' just a misnomer. There was a logical past after the naming of Evening Colleges.
We shall go to the history later on. The reality is otherwise. There are so many merits in Evening Colleges.
First, now a days,it is ridiculously called Evening colleges. They actually,do not start in the evening. They start normally about 2 a.m.after noon. So,they can be better called as 'After-noon colleges'.
Secondly,The students attending these colleges have the added advantage of pursuing Add-on courses, vocational courses,Language Couses,Computer Courses in the morning and can attend classes in the after noon.
Thirdly,Since all most all the colleges have been converted to co-ed colleges ,the authority take extra security measures for the Girls' students. The Colleges set up anti-ragging cell, women-cell, disciplinary committee etc.
Forthly,Evening Colleges have separate total administration with full fledged Principal. The Colleges are not under the Day College Administration or Day College Principal over their head.
Fifthly, Strong faculty,(no less qualified) in different subjects take interest care in studies as well as college's extracurricular activities.
Sixthly,Evening Colleges have exclusively separate Library, reading room,Separate common rooms for both girls and boys.
Seventhly,UGC disbursed grant in aids directly to the concerned colleges. They have separate administration officer and strong batch of employees.
Only,In some cases,The Evening Colleges administer their activities from the same building contributing funds for the building. And the same Governing body looking after the day and the Evening colleges.

Past history carries the stigma:
A Time was there when evening colleges were started for the benefit of the working people. At day time these working class used to go to their regular jobs and in the evening they used to attend evening classes for the completion of their graduation.
Morning College principal used to govern both the colleges with his evening counterpart, acting as his subordinate. And the evening college were called as night shift. But,that situation has been over now.The morning and evening colleges now function as distinct entities with separate administration, offices, staff, libraries and in some cases auditoriums. As described above. The Evening colleges came in to being in 1970 when the University Grants Commission sanctioned 11 colleges under the Delhi University to cater to the needs of men and women who wished to study but could not because they held jobs in the day time. At these colleges ,classes were held in the evening. But, as times gone by number of Girls students increases, need for more full fledged colleges were felt. The Evening colleges gradually converted to full-fledged Affiliated colleges with separate entity.
