Counselling
A glimpse on Orientation program
By: Tushar Kant Mishra,

(The new session of the University of Delhi is going to start in the middle of July 2009. About 81 colleges affiliated to Delhi University are being engaged in preparing themselves to welcome the new students to the respective colleges. The orientation program is the most important feature on the eve of beginning the session. The fresh students enter the arena of a new educational panorama after completing 12 years' of routine school life. College life is completely new for them. They need to be trained or groomed to cope up with a new environment. Responsibility, sincerity and self imposed discipline are the essential aspects for the freshers. So, the duties of the college teachers are to make the students aware of the college life, so that they can be groomed up properly for their future.
Prof.T.K.Misra has been a veteran teacher with vast experience in grooming up the students. We are presenting here a small but thoughtful article written by him for the benefit of the students.-The, Editor, Campusinfoindia.com)
Every course or discipline is important some way or other. It's utility, however, is dependent upon how well has it been groomed or implanted into the child. Economists have established that the utility or want satisfying power does not lie in the product. It always lies in the mind of the customer. Had utility been found in the product the student and the Rickshaw puller both would have found similar utility or satisfaction from a book and hence both would have readily paid the same amount for the book. To a Rickshaw puller book has got no utility so he will not be willing to pay a penny for it. Whereas it has got so much utility for a student and so he is ready to pay for it any desired amount. Likewise, to a non-vegetarian any non- vegetarian food does not carry utility. And if you force him to consume it he might vomit it out.. Similarly if you force a child to take up particular course he might perform miserably.
Utility does not lie in a course or discipline. It lies in the mind of the student. Unless a student is enlightened about the utility of particular course in life and society he cannot derive satisfaction from doing it. And hence would not be ready to pay price for it in terms of time, money, sacrifice of leisure or comforts.
Orientation is a process, therefore, of bringing the horse to the cart. Absence of orientation amounts to bringing the cart before the horse or placing a course in front of student and not the other way around. When a non-vegetarian or vegetarian is medically required to interchange food habits, they need to be oriented towards particular food habit first. They need to be enlightening on the respective.
merits or limits of foods and their body requirements. Desired out come cannot be expected in the want of proper orientation.
Counselling the Child
Till recently counselling was considered as superfluous or a luxurious exercise. Counselling gained its recognition in the middle class since late 90's. Various psycho-analytical tools and aptitude tests also developed in the recent past only. Yet it has a long way to go in gaining momentum and playing legitimate role in the upbringing of a child. Even today, counselling is considered as a top-down exercise where courses, avenues and opportunities are described and then the child is lured or motivated to choose one of them.
True counselling should be done through other way around. It should be based up on the feed back of the child on his aptitude, potentials, perceptions feelings, emotions, behaviour and the outlook. There is always a job for the toppers, be it in astrology, paintings, literature, sports or whatever. Hence the task before the counsellors is to put right man at the right job or that is to say right child in the right course. They have to reverse the general tendency of choosing the career that is in demand. Supply of right kind of product has the inherent capability to create its own demand in the market.
The million dollar question is that whether you wish to create a child who is to be guided by the market forces or the one who has to guide the destiny of the market. The task of the counsellor is also to reassure the client that it is not the work that follows the money but it is the money that follows hard work. Counsellor can achieve this task only when he interacts with the client more through heart than by the prescribed design or piece of information.
Orientation, motivation and the success story

Task of orientation is to motivate learners and add inner-strength in them through proper deliberation on the subject. Adequate motivation or such inner-strength creates a comfort-zone for learners, which is extremely important for registering success. Every one likes to be in his comfort-zone.
Amir Khan in his legendary role has remarkably exemplified the concept of orientation in his Hindi movie 'Lagaan'. It shows how with proper orientation adequate motivation can be created and thereby, with a comfort-zone, success even in strange subjects can be registered. Likewise, the case for proper counseling of a child has been beautifully highlighted in his brilliant movie 'Tare zamin pe'.
Stress is the outcome when you work out a thing that is not of your interest. You don not have stress in hours of interesting movie, novel or celebration of some kind. Likewise, even studies or office work can be made stress-free if it is made interesting or entertaining. Stress is also caused when we intend to outperform others in subjects where we lack competency. And success story is the casualty in your case if you are under stress.

Beacon for Success
Ilashri Jaiswal.
In this present world scenario, there are so many people who have got success and there some who are trying to get success .Every body wants success in their own live's whether it is their own or others .Parents want success for their children, teachers want success for their students, students in their exams, players in sports, politicians in elections and so on. As far as students are concerned in this matter, sometimes they are overburdened with the expectations of parents, teachers, friends and their personal high-ambitions.
Students can easily and readily soar to success, if they think and believe that they can definitely and positively attain success. Anything is possible to whom that believeth and toils. All the great people whom we admire and worship today were once like you and me. Men who are famous and well known today , won their name and fame with the same gifts that you and I possess. We too can rise, be strong and wise, and crown ourselves with success and glory if we stake our faith on honest work .It is said, 'Success is the result of good judgement.Good judgement is the result of experience. Experience is often the result of bad judgement."
Success stories are formed when a person is wise enough to learn from his previous mistakes. The key of success is the combination of knowledge and effort. Success starts and grows with will power. Only that man wins who thinks and believes he can. Because it is only will power which leads us towards optimism and gives power to face hard phases of life. It is your firm will which makes you meet every adverse circumstance. The way to succeed is to start sooner, work harder and learn more than your competitions about the job you have undertaken, because once you start, it gets easier with time. To conclude, here are some points to be noted which can be added in your schedule to get success in your life:
- Make up your mind. Choose a worthy goal which you like best.
- Keep your attention focused to the coveted object. Do not divert
your attention and allow your energies to get dissipated.
- Stick to your aim and start work with full faith in yourself.
- Gather the facts, chart your route, get going and keep going.
- Do things then and there. Be a great economizer of time.
- Be punctual in doing your work. Every activity should be planned, so that every minute is utilized
- Sweating is the secret of success. For success, one needs 5% inspiration and 95% preparation
- Be disciplined
- Try to learn from others experience and mistakes
- Always believe in dignity of labour
- Diligence and moderation are the best steps to climb to excellence and reach the top. The climb to the top is not a walkover, but a walk up.

What the youth should know about counselling.
What's counselling all about?
By Shri Nilamber Pant* Some times we all have problems that are worrying. Think of a confusing jigsaw when
all the pieces are difficult to fit together. Talking about a problem in counselling is like sorting out all the pieces so we can begin to build a picture that makes more sense to us. The Indian youth is still hesitant to discuss problems, in a way in today's highly stressful world, your health and performance depends, to a large extent, on remaining calm under pressure, alert yet relaxed. Sometimes it's difficult to talk to parents, friends or teachers about things that are making us anxious. A counselor is someone you can talk to in a different way, someone who will listen to you very carefully, who will not judge you or tell you what to do.Counselling is about helping you to work things out for yourself, making decisions and choices and helping you to look at things differently. It can help you to feel better about yourself. Career counselling in Secondary schools is important for all students, but it is especially critical for students with learning disabilities.
Following are areas could be developed by effective counselling:
- Self Awareness
- Awareness of others
- Basic Counselling skills including the following :attending skills, active listening, responding, Empathy
- Understanding one's values, stereotypes and prejudices
- Problem solving skill
- Conflict resolution skill
One of the most popular buzzwords in business today is the word 'Kaizen'. This is a Japanese word meaning 'incremental improvement'.so any way change or benefit you is welcome. In a way, one can learn while solving his/hers problem, its one of gains you get from counselling. Need----Research has also shown that the majority of diseases in HUMAN BEINGS have a psychosomatic origin, i.e., they first start in the mind & then manifest themselves in the body. So, there is nothing to feel low about the fact that you need counselling, there is nothing negative about it. This mistake often involve distorted thought patterns .rigid, unrealistic ways of perceiving what is happening to us. So, effective counselling can give you a positive way ahead to solve your problems .so if you get 10% of positivity. You have gained a little.
Role model: You can get positive attitude from your ideal person who is supposed to be Your role model, who can look through your problems...it may be any one...matter is to adopt a positive attitude towards your problem from the person.
Media: Media (print media), T.V.shows have given a radical change is our society, not to blame ..the better side has given many youth's career in music, acting etc. So, it's inborn need of counselling at some point of time. Is it a way of counselling ? -yes, the counselor gives a chance to the talented & guide to use resources more and more .So, my suggestion to the youth of today is..get set go.share. care.nurture positive attitude...Develop visionary. According to Oprah Winfrey's opinion, "As you become more clear who you really are, you'll be better able to decide what is best for you-the first time around."

Varshney further explains, "Students were also informed of our colleges possessing e-esource centres equipped with 40 computers each, also we provide free internet facilities and a large number of journals." Currently, some five open house sessions have been held by Delhi University specifically for undergraduates with both teachers and student counsellors participating.
